Leeds are already struggling in the Premier League as it is.

With four defeats in the last five outings, the pressure is on Daniel Farke to deliver – even more so with Ange Postecoglou and Brendan Rodgers currently out of work.

However – if Leeds do manage to survive this season – they have now been tipped to struggle in the 2026/27 campaign by Ben Jacobs with a new financial system set to be implemented.

Leeds United tipped to be “big losers” ahead of new financial rules

After a vote between all 20 Premier League clubs, it has now been decided that Squad Cost Ratio (SCR) and Sustainability and Systemic Resilience (SSR) will replace Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) from the start of next season.

Before we go any further, this is how the Premier League themselves define SCR: “Squad Cost Ratio is a financial regulation that limits Premier League clubs’ on-pitch spending to 85% of their football-related revenue and net profit/loss from player sales.”

How will this impact Leeds?

Well, Jacobs feels they will “struggle” – telling the Highbury Squad podcast: “The big losers are going to be clubs that have smaller stadiums, have less commercial revenue, and they might have to find new ways of generating revenue, but still have had a big spend in the market. So Bournemouth, Leeds United being newly promoted, Sunderland, Fulham as well.

“They’re the ones that are going to struggle. And over time, they’re going to have to navigate this new system, knowing that as important as sales or simply persuading a footballer to join your club will be, how strong your brand is (too).”

Elland Road expansion now even more important for Leeds United

Leeds are hoping to develop Elland Road into a 53,000-seater stadium, a significant increase on the current capacity of 37,645.

Plans are in the works and look set to be green-lit by the council if Leeds can ensure there are no “increases in on-street parking or traffic congestion” caused by the expansion.

Leeds United News have been told gate receipts are set to spike by £25m on a yearly basis if this expansion materialises.

That would have already been a welcome cash boost, but it is now even more significant as SCR is set to arrive in the Premier League.
