Just two points separate the top three after Leeds United’s defeat to Portsmouth on Sunday lunchtime, and Leeds could be in third place when they play again on Wednesday night.
Colby Bishop’s dart between a hesitant Illan Meslier and an unusually unsure Joe Rodon saw the Pompey striker manage to dink a well-placed effort off the post and into the Leeds net, the only goal of the game.
Earlier, Leeds had missed two golden chances through Joel Piroe. Junior Firpo then missed a one-on-one before hitting the bar with a header, while Dan James’ header went wide. Sam Byram saw his effort saved.
That, and Leeds were waved away a clear penalty in the eyes of Lucy Ward and Lee Hendrie. A frustrating afternoon for Leeds but one that has now seen Patrick Bamford’s prediction earlier this season turn true.

Patrick Bamford made promotion race prediction back in October
Leeds and Sheffield United are now on level points, with Daniel Farke’s men only top thanks to a much-superior goal difference. That could prove crucial in 10 games time, if it remains as close as it currently is.
Then, Burnley are only two points behind. Should both Sheffield United and Burnley win on Tuesday, The Whites will face Millwall in third place. Bamford said in October that the race for promotion will be close.
He told the BBC’s 72+ Podcast: “It’s going to be another close league again. This year could even be a bit harder than last, there’s five or six teams who could go for the top two. Hopefully we are one of them.”

How many points did Leeds have at this stage, last season?
Last season saw Bamford’s Leeds reach 90 points, but become the first side this century to fail to go up with 90 points or more. Of course, The Whites finished third and were forced into the play-off drama.
Leeds will be desperate to avoid the same fate this season, especially as Gary Lineker reminded Leeds that third place often misses out. With 10 games to go last season, Leeds had the same amount of points.
Both sides were on 76 points, but last season, The Whites were in third palce. Two points behind Ipswich and five off Leicester. Leeds amassed just 14 points from their last 10 games last term, easily improved.
