TalkSPORT presenter says Leeds could go after Patrick Vieira after previous interest

TalkSPORT presenter Sam Matterface has claimed (Monday, 10.30AM) Leeds United could go back in for Patrick Vieira after the Frenchman showed interest in taking over from Jesse Marsch – while manager of Crystal Palace.

Last week, The Athletic reported an intriguing story that Vieira – who was sacked by Palace on Friday – was actually interested in taking over at Leeds from Marsch. That is despite still being in the Palace hosteat. There were no talks.

Leeds have since brought in Javi Gracia as manager, while Palace remain winless in 2023. Vieira has gone, and the Eagles were dispatched 4-1 by League leaders Arsenal. Leeds are now a point behind Palace, with a game in hand.

Matterface was speaking about Vieira’s sacking last week, and the decision to let him go just two days before the 4-1 defeat to Arsenal. He mentioned that there was interest in Vieira taking over at Leeds – and it could still happen.

He said on TalkSPORT on Monday morning: “Leeds were interested in appointing Patrick Vieira when they sacked Jesse Marsch and if things don’t go to plan at Leeds, don’t be surprised if they go after him again.”

Right now, as things stand, Leeds will be delighted with the start Gracia has made. Yes, defeat in the FA Cup was disappointing but even in the 2-0 loss to Fulham – Leeds played well. Seven points from a possible 12 in the league.

Two massive wins over relegation rivals in Southampton and Wolves, while getting a point against an incredibly strong Brighton. Defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge which was always going to be tough despite Chelsea’s form.

Gracia has got his Leeds side playing with a balance. Six goals in two league games shows he has not diminished any attacking flair, but the Leeds side look more solid. Even on Saturday, they got the win without Tyler Adams.

So, with Gracia impressing and on a ‘flexible contract’, you would imagine that if things continue to go the way they are doing, the Spaniard could be given an extended stay beyond the end of the season. Things are looking up.
