Leeds United sit eight points behind Ipswich Town in the race for automatic promotion and are now in fourth after losing to Preston – but Joel Piroe is still confident that the Whites can catch Ipswich.
One win, and just four points from the last four games, has seen Leeds drop off in the race to finish in the top two. Despite beating Ipswich 4-0, Leeds have also suffered losses to Sunderland and Preston.
Next up, is a really tough test against West Brom away from home. Leeds only managed a draw against Carlos Corberan’s side in the reverse fixture – with Luke Ayling heading home an equaliser, ending 1-1.
Leeds struggled against Corberan’s side at Elland Road and while the clash came at a time when there was a bit of doubt and controversy in the air at Leeds – it was still a tough game. Leeds need to win.
Piroe has been speaking to ESPN in the Netherlands ahead of the clash and the 24-year-old was asked if he felt Leeds could still catch Ipswich in the race for the top two. He says Leeds are still confident.
“Although there is quite a gap between us and Ipswich Town, we are still very confident. Such a gap can quickly disappear, so we know that everything is still possible. Our goal is to be promoted immediately.”

Piroe has been excellent for Leeds but if the Whites are to catch Ipswich, then the Dutchman needs to be getting himself more involved in games. Jon Newsome says he goes “in and out” of games too much.
Ahead of the trip to West Brom, Leeds could welcome back Sam Byram after he returned to the bench at Preston. Daniel Farke said he could play, describing Byram as the club’s “most consistent” this term.
