Genk sporting director Dimitri De Conde has been quoted by Belgian outlet Voetbal Krant as saying that he is more than happy to remain where he is, amid reports linking him with Leeds United – as long as Genk remain ambitious.
De Conde, 48, is the man behind the impressive transfer record at Genk. He has been responsible for the big sales of players such as Leon Bailey, Wilfried Ndidi, Joakim Maehle, Paul Onuachu and plenty more. Leeds are interested.
According to Nieuwsblad, Leeds want De Conde to replace Victor Orta at Elland Road. But Leeds are not the only English club interested in De Conde. Southampton – who have also been relegated – and Tottenham are also keen.
Speaking for the first time since De Conde had been linked with a move away from Genk and to England, the Genk sporting director closed the door almost entirely on an exit. But only, if Genk continue to show the same ambition.
“That’s the beauty: when we win prizes, the benefit goes not to individuals, but to our community. That is why I also say: as long as is KRC Genk ambitious and I feel that we can grow, I am not thinking about leaving,” De Conde said.
De Conde happy to remain at Genk amid Leeds reports on one condition
Genk finished in third on Sunday, despite going into the weekend with a chance of winning the League title. Indeed, it was Toby Alderweireld that snatched the title from under Genk’s noses. Genk were winning 2-1, in injury time.
But Alderweireld and Royal Antwerp secured the title. The ex-Tottenham defender slammed home a beautiful effort from 20 yards into the top corner to draw level – which was enough for Antwerp to win the league ahead of Genk.
With Genk still qualifying for the qualifying round of the Champions League, that ambition is likely to remain this summer. But, the lure of English football and certainly, a move to Spurs, could prove tempting. Time will tell.
