Leeds United produced a wonderful second-half performance to earn a point against Premier League champions Liverpool at Elland Road on Monday night – amid a tumultuous 24 hours in the footballing world following the announcement by clubs that have signed up to the newly-formed European Super League. Here is the social media round-up following the draw with Liverpool, as Diego Llorente headed home:
Van Aanholt message, amid reports
Crystal Palace defender Patrick van Aanholt has been linked with a move to Leeds United. The Netherlands international is out of contract with the London side this summer and The Mirror claim Leeds are considering a move to lure the ex-Chelsea man to Elland Road this summer. He posted on Twitter having watched Leeds outclass Liverpool – one of the six English Super League sides – and joked that Leeds should be in the ESL.
Cheeky Meslier
Jurgen Klopp was not happy with the t-shirts worn by Leeds following the announcement of the ESL – which stated that clubs should “earn” a place in the Champions League, rather than lose the competitiveness and just be a club in a non-relegation division. Those t-shirts were left in the Liverpool dressing room before the match, and Meslier posted on Instagram with a cheeky message after the 1-1 draw.
Roberts strikes chord with Leeds fans
When Leeds gained promotion, players would have been desperate to see the Elland Road roar in the top tier of English football. That is yet to be seen due to the pandemic – but the fans remains in the minds of the Leeds players. Indeed, Elland Road will have been rocking when Llorente headed in Jack Harrison’s corner – and Roberts has sent a heartfelt message to supporters on his Instagram story – as posted on our Twitter account.
Llorente posts touching message
It was the Spain international’s first goal in Leeds colours since his move from Real Sociedad, heading home superbly and leaving Alisson motionless. He is timing his run of form, and his fitness, perfectly – with Spain manager Luis Enrique likely to be looking on with a keen eye. He posted a heartfelt message, dedicating his goal to his Grandfather with a post on Instagram – following the recent passing of his loved one. Pure class.
