Sky Sports pundit says Leeds United have a player that is ‘really good’ but needs to ‘settle down’

Leeds United return to action against Burnley this weekend almost feels like the real start of the season with so many new faces ready to settle.

The Whites did enjoy a pretty productive August on the pitch as they picked up eight points from their four matches, which sees them sat fourth in the Championship.

However, off the pitch, it was chaos right until the very end. Leeds lost various key players over the course of the summer, with several of the signings brought into replace them, made late in the window.

As is always the case as a Championship club, there is always that worry right up until the deadline that a Premier League side could swoop in to sign a player.

However, this weekend is the first set of fixtures where all focus can now be on the pitch, with clarity over each and every player’s future.

Jobi McAnuff makes Wilfried Gnonto claim at Leeds

Just a matter of hours after that 11pm deadline on Friday 30 August, Leeds had another announcement to make.

Following months of speculation regarding whether he would leave alongside his best friends at Leeds Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter, Wilfried Gnonto put pen-to-paper on a new four-year-deal.

Gnonto’s contract does not include a release clause and comes after a summer where he refused to let speculation affect him, despite a £23 million offer from Everton.

A settled summer already looks as though it is paying dividends for Gnonto, with his performances having been very impressive at the start of this season.

Speaking on the latest episode of the BBC’s 72+ Podcast, Jobi McAnuff believes Gnonto’s new contract is crucial to him really settling down and showing his best form at Leeds.

He said: “Bringing Solomon in and then Gnonto signing a new deal, again one of those who has been linked with clubs, not just last season but over the summer as well.

“That might just help him settle down and be like, this is where you are at now, let’s get it done. They have some really good attacking players, with Aaronson coming into the mix as well.”

What Gnonto said right after signing his new deal

Clearly Gnonto is of the same opinion as McAnuff based on what he said in an interview just after signing his new deal at Elland Road.

Gnonto spoke of the importance at finding some consistency for the season ahead and on the evidence of the opening four matches, that is what he’s getting.

He said: “I have been here two years now, going into my third season I am really happy to be here. It feels like, since the start, my second home and I have really enjoyed being here. With the ambition of the club, I see my future here.

“There have been many ups and downs and going into this season I feel it is important for me to find some consistency. I feel like the right place to do it is here so I am really happy and can’t wait to keep going.”
