Sam Greenwood has told Middlesbrough’s site that he is “over the moon” to be leaving Leeds United to join Michael Carrick’s side – responding when asked if he is disappointed he is not playing more for us.
Greenwood, 21, has only managed two sub outings in our first six games this season – though to begin with, that was due to injury. He came on against Salford on Tuesday, smashing a free-kick off the bar.
A few days later, Greenwood has teamed up with long-term Leeds target Lewis O’Brien at The Riverside. It sees the playmaker return to the North East, having come through the academy at rivals Sunderland.
Of course, £3m Greenwood will be barred from facing Leeds – but it does see a player with genuine quality go to a team that should be in the mix with Leeds to go up. He may make his debut this weekend.
Greenwood and O’Brien held a press conference on Thursday following their arrival. The Leeds star said he was “over the moon” to join Boro, and was asked if he was disappointed by his Leeds game time.
“I’m over the moon. Being from the North East, I know how big of a club it is. I’m just excited. It’s really nice being back here, family around me. It’s really nice,” Greenwood said, in a video on Boro’s website.
Asked if he was disappointed by his lack of Leeds game time, he said: “At the minute, I just feel excited to be playing for Middlesbrough and can’t wait to kick on and get some valuable minutes under my belt.”

It is a real shame to see Greenwood go. Especially, when Leeds are lacking in a no.10. Greenwood can of course play up top and in midfield, but his best role is as a 10. We are trying to sign Celtic’s Matt O’Riley.
But surely, keeping Greenwood until we got a player like O’Riley in would have made sense – in case we cannot get a deal done for the Celtic star, or another no.10. It seems unlikely we will now sign O’Riley.
