Ross McCormack has suggested that Jamie Shackleton could probably do a decent job in any position and claimed that the Leeds United youngster never lets the manager down when he plays.

McCormack was speaking on BBC Radio Leeds after Leeds beat Huddersfield Town 4-1 at Elland Road on Saturday to keep the pressure on the promotion chasers in the Championship.

Jamie Shackleton has made a strong return to the Leeds fold this season. Many would have assumed that the writing was on the wall for the 24-year-old after he left on loan last year.

However, Leeds’ relegation opened the door for the academy graduate to come back into the fold. And he has been really impressive in the opening stages of the new season.

Shackleton started at right-back against Huddersfield on Saturday. And after an impressive showing, Ross McCormack suggested that he is a player that Daniel Farke can definitely rely on.

“Steady away. I think he’s probably unfortunate in the first-half that everything seemed to come down the left,” he told BBC Radio Leeds. “But he’s one of those players that you could put into the team in any position. He’s got the manager’s trust and rightly so, because he never lets anyone down.”

New contract should be being prepared

Shackleton is one of those players that every club needs. He may not grab many of the headlines and he may not steal the show too often. But he sets an example to others with how consistent he is.

He is someone who has had some superb moments in the Premier League too. So he has the potential to improve further.

Shackleton reportedly hopes to sign a new contract at Leeds and stay beyond this season. And on current evidence, the Whites would be wise to keep him around.

It may not be a contract extension which captures the imagination of the supporters. But, like the deal to sign Sam Byram on a free transfer, it could prove to be a really underrated piece of business to ensure that Shackleton stays beyond this season.
