Ross McCormack explains what’s giving him a ‘bad feeling’ about Leeds United this season

The situation surrounding Leeds United’s push for automatic promotion looks bleak compared to a month ago, shortly after beating Sheffield United at Bramall Lane late on.

Leeds now sit in third and two points behind leaders Burnley having gone five points clear following Ao Tanaka and Joel Piroe’s late goals to win 3-1 against Chris Wilder’s men. Leeds’ form has been woeful.

Like last season, it feels like the pressure has got to Leeds with the March international break playing havoc once again. Leeds have won one in six, compared to Sheffield United’s four and Burnley’s five.

Three consecutive draws, the last of which was a 1-1 tie at Kenilworth Road against Luton Town, sees Leeds sitting in the play-offs with six games left. That run of six games starts at Middlesbrough tonight.

Ross McCormack shares worrying Leeds United promotion verdict

It might feel bleak but Leeds still remain in a very promising position. Leeds have the easiest of the run-ins on paper, while Gary Lineker says Sheffield United and Burnley hands the race into Leeds’ favour.

Speaking on TalkSPORT on Tuesday (April 8, 9.40AM), former Leeds skipper McCormack said why he is now worried for Leeds going into the final six games. It will be the play-offs for Leeds, as things stand.

“To be honest, I think so [Leeds fans should be worried]. Even when you look back to last season, they’d done ever so well to catch Leicester at the top of the table, and then overtook them,” McCormack said.

“After the international break, we capitulated. Same again, I’ve got a little bit of a bad feeling, I look at Sheffield United, they’ve won four of last six, Burnley have won five of their last six, Leeds have won one.”

How many points do Leeds United need for automatic promotion

With Burnley on 84 and Sheffield United on 83, both sides are still able to go and win 100 points if they win their remaining six matches. But if one does, the other won’t be able to given they play each other.

Realistically with the pressure of the run-in however, none of the three sides are going to win all six of their remaining games. The run-in always springs a surprise, such as Oxford United’s win on Saturday.

If Leeds can manage four wins from the remaining six games it will take them to 94 points. Throw in a couple of draws, and that will heap the pressure on Sheffield United and Burnley – but it is a big ask.
