Leeds United are reportedly interested in a move for Hammarby defender Nathaniel Adjei ahead of the January window – and a potential agreement for the Ghanaian is ominous for Charlie Cresswell.
Cresswell returned in the summer after a superb spell on loan at Millwall, in which he was largely first choice – and scored five goals. He played 30 times, and would have played more but for a facial injury.
The England U21 man was expected to start for Leeds and be a regular, under Daniel Farke. But the German boss chose to sign Joe Rodon on loan, and the Wales star has since been superb for Leeds.
With Liam Coopewr preferred in the pecking order, Cresswell is now fourth choice – despite only signing a new deal in the summer. He has failed to make the last four matchday squads, left out of the side.
So, it might have been that come January, Cresswell will have been eyeing a loan exit. Now, Leeds are reportedly in the mix for Hammarby’s Adjei. According to Fotboll Direkt, Leeds want the £3.5m giant.

A player that has also attracted interest from Celtic and Rangers, as per Sky Sports. A right-footed central defender, of similar age to Cresswell at 21. It is only going to push Cresswell towards an exit.
Even if Leeds do not go and sign Adjei, potential interest in the centre-back suggests Leeds want a central defender in January and that could be the last straw for Cresswell. He may request a move.
Of course, there are other clubs after Adjei and it might be that he is just one of a number of names on a long list of players Leeds have scouted. But, interest and a potential move will mean Cresswell must go.
