Marcelo Bielsa told people close to him that he would be open to working in the UK again shortly after being sacked by Leeds United last season, according to Phil Hay in The Athletic.

Had Leeds fans been asked just a few weeks ago to predict Bielsa’s next club, it is highly unlikely that any would have even considered opting for Premier League rivals Bournemouth – even while the Cherries found themselves without a manager.

Leeds and Bielsa appeared to be such a significant partnership for both parties that it was hard to imagine him working in England again.

Bielsa open to working in UK again

Now however, that seems to be a real possibility. The Athletic reported that the Cherries really want Bielsa as their next boss.

And the fact that the rumours have more than lingered for a few days certainly suggests that there is a real chance that the Argentinian will end up on the south coast.

Previously, Bielsa working in England again seemed unthinkable. However, it seems that he has been open to a return for some time.

In fact, The Athletic reported that Bielsa told people close to him that he would consider another opportunity working in the UK after being sacked by Leeds.

El Loco’s Premier League return would not sit right with many

It’s hard not to feel a range of emotions about the prospect of Bielsa coming back to the Premier League.

Leeds have moved on. Jesse Marsch managed to steady the ship and just about keep the side in the top-flight last year. And he has earned the chance to try and take the side forward.

The jury may still be out on Marsch somewhat. But it is, admittedly, impossible to argue with those who felt that Leeds were getting relegated had Bielsa stayed.

Bielsa going to Bournemouth will probably take a little of the shine off how he is looked upon in Leeds.

He is an iconic figure. There seemed to be a period of grieving amongst the fans when he left. And no-one will forget how he masterminded our promotion back to the Premier League.

Unfortunately, Bournemouth are one of the teams we are battling with to stay in the top-flight. So Bielsa going there will – rightly or wrongly – not sit right with many.

Certainly, many supporters will feel some relief if he decides against taking the job.
