Spanish media are reporting on Wednesday morning that West Ham United are now targeting Rayo Vallecano boss Andoni Iraola as a potential replacement for David Moyes – after he rejected a move to Leeds United in February.
Iraola is already quite the accomplished manager despite only turning 40 last June. He has more than 200 games under his belt as a manager at three different clubs – the best of which has come during his stint at his current side.
Indeed, Iraola took over at Rayo while they were in the second tier. He gained promotion in 2021 to La Liga and guided his side to a 12th-placed finish. On a shoe string, he had Rayo fans dreaming of Europe at a point this term.
Leeds came knocking in February. The Mail said Leeds were willing to spend £7m to bring him to Elland Road after the sacking of Jesse Marsch. But a move fell through and Iraola has since broken his silence on talks with Leeds.
Now, according to Cadena SER, relayed by Grada 3, Leeds are not the only Premier League club to show interest in Iraola. Indeed, West Ham are looking at potential candidates and the report says he has emerged as a contender.
West Ham now targeting Andoni Iraola after he rejected Leeds move
It will be interesting to see if Leeds are still interested in Iraola. Of course, the Whites will have to be in the Premier League. The only reason that he decided to reject a move to Leeds is given the position Leeds found themselves in.
And, that he was fighting for Europe with Rayo – something which has since subsided somewhat. If Leeds do stay in the top tier, then it might be that Javi Gracia is given the job permanently. But that seems doubtful at this stage.
