Mateusz Klich is understood to be open to a move from Leeds United to DC United during the January transfer window, according to a report from The Athletic.
Klich’s future has been a talking point for several months. Jesse Marsch hinted in the summer that he could leave Elland Road as he appeared to fall closer to the periphery of the squad.
His opening day cameo against Wolves appeared to change the game for Klich. And ultimately, he stayed put.
Klich open to move
He has since gone on to make just 11 substitute appearances in the Premier League this season. And he is still awaiting that first top-flight start of the campaign.
Journalist Tom Bogert reported last week that a move to DC United was now close ahead of the January window. And Phil Hay has now confirmed those reports, telling The Athletic that Klich is open to the switch.
It would certainly appear that a move away is becoming increasingly likely. And that is obviously a shame considering what the 32-year-old has given to the Whites over the last few years.
His departure would represent a significant moment for Leeds. We have seen recent icons leave the club, with the likes of Pablo Hernandez, Gjanni Alioski and Kalvin Phillips amongst those to go in the last couple of years.
But Klich – who was labelled an ‘unsung hero‘ – moving on would signal that those occurrences are going to become more common as the remaining heroes of promotion start to be phased out.
Moving them on in the right way and in the right manner is going to be crucial for Leeds and Jesse Marsch. Clearly, many of those players remain key members of the squad, even if their influence on the pitch is waning.
Klich’s stance is understandable. Selfishly, we could hope to keep him for what he offers off the bench. But it is little surprise that that may not satisfy the 32-year-old at this stage of his career.
