A report from the Yorkshire Evening Post has claimed that there is little chance of Cody Drameh signing a new contract at Leeds United with his current deal set to expire at the end of next season.
Jesse Marsch’s use of Drameh has been perplexing. The right-back returned to the ranks in the summer off the back of a hugely successful loan spell with Cardiff City. He was labelled ‘special‘ during his time with the Bluebirds.
Leeds brought in Rasmus Kristensen in the most recent window. And with that, Drameh has only made one appearance for the Whites in the Premier League this season.
Cody Drameh unlikely to sign new Leeds contract
In fact, he has not been in a match day squad since the defeat to Brentford at the start of September.
Fabrizio Romano previously suggested that a number of clubs want the 20-year-old ahead of the January window. And it seems that Leeds are bracing themselves for Drameh’s departure in the winter.
According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, there is almost no chance of Drameh extending his contract which expires in 2024. Leeds meanwhile, are open to permanent offers for the youngster.
To many, the report on Drameh will set the alarm bells ringing. The fans have had high hopes for the right-back ever since his arrival from Fulham in 2020.
Marcelo Bielsa did not tend to rush youngsters into the first-team. So it was little surprise that he was forced to bide his time before he made his debut.
That loan spell at Cardiff appeared to have the potential to be a turning point. Leeds need to move on from having Luke Ayling as a regular starter. And Drameh may have felt that his chance was coming.
Kristensen has improved as the weeks have gone on. But Ayling now appears to be ahead of Drameh in the pecking order.
That is understandable for the time-being. But Drameh’s contract situation means that something has to give at some stage.
Has Kristensen been so good that Drameh has no right to expect a chance? No, not really. So you can understand why he may have little intention of extending his stay.
Given how long is left on his deal, that may force Leeds to let him go in the near future.
