Report: Leeds summer signing open to signing new contract despite relegation

Leeds United are open to offering Joel Robles a new contract following their relegation from the Premier League.

That is according to a report from The Athletic, which notes that the goalkeeper is also open to remaining at Elland Road after his short run in the side.

Joel Robles was one of the players who emerged from Sam Allardyce’s tenure with some credit in the bank. The Spaniard arguably came in much later than he should have done with Illan Meslier looking extremely short of confidence.

The 32-year-old did nothing spectacular during his four starts. But he did still manage to impress a number of the fans with his performances. He certainly seemed to be a lot more commanding than Meslier had been.

And with Meslier one of the contenders to perhaps leave Leeds this summer, it seems that it would make sense to hold onto Joel in the second tier.

The Athletic reports that Joel’s contract expires in the summer. However, both the goalkeeper and Leeds are interested in extending his terms.

Leeds are going to have to be smart in the market this summer. They should be able to make some money on a number of players who underperformed this past season. But they are also going to lose out on a lot of revenue.

So if Meslier does leave, it surely makes a lot of sense to extend Joel’s deal by a year. Whether he is first-choice or not, he brings a lot to the group.

There is so much that is likely to change at Leeds this summer. So the more they can keep the same, the better. And that may include persisting with Joel as the number one next year.
