Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio reports that Leeds United star Willy Gnonto has “probably” suffered a “sprain” to his ankle after the winger was taken off on 22 minutes during Italy’s 2-0 win over Malta in Euro 2024 qualifying.

Gnonto, 19, won his tenth cap on Sunday. He was given a start against Malta in Italy’s second game of the break, after coming off the bench in the 2-1 loss to England in Naples on Thursday. But it ended prematurely for Gnonto.

The Italy star was forced to exit the field of play, after turning badly and falling to the ground. He tried to continue to play on the ankle, but clearly, the twist proved too much and Roberto Mancini took the Leeds favourite off the pitch.

It comes after Tyler Adams picked up a hamstring injury before the break, ruling him out of representing the USA and potentially, out of the trip to Arsenal on April 1. Then, Max Wober suffered an injury to his left thigh on Friday.

The left-footed Leeds defender, like Gnonto, had to be withdrawn in the first half of his nation’s win over Azerbaijan. Now, Gnonto is the latest injury blow – and Di Marzio has given an update. He says the injury is ‘probably a sprain’.

If this is the case, then it is a blow. Not one that will keep Gnonto sidelined for a number of weeks. But it might mean he is out for the trip to Arsenal and possibly the game after that – a crucial home clash against Nottingham Forest.

What is more frustrating to Leeds fans is that, just as all our injured players had come back – Adams, Wober and now, Gnonto, have got issues. Three of our most-important players at this moment in a fight against the drop.
