Leeds United are seriously interested in signing Matheus Cunha, with The Athletic reporting that the forward is expected to move to the Premier League during the January transfer window.

Cunha has endured a tough time since moving to Atletico Madrid. He has only managed seven goals in 54 appearances in all competitions. And he is yet to find the back of the net this season.

Nevertheless, there are a number of clubs keen on signing the 23-year-old next month.

And The Athletic suggests that Leeds are seriously interested. The report notes that the Whites tried to sign Cunha before his move to the Spanish capital in 2021.

They are not the only Premier League side keen on a deal, with Wolves optimistic of securing a move. But it would seem that Victor Orta wants to bring Cunha to Elland Road next month.

Leeds absolutely have to strengthen up front while the window is open. We all saw how harmful not doing anything of note in January was last season.

Patrick Bamford, unfortunately, cannot seem to stay fit. It has now been more than a year since he last scored for the Whites. And he did not travel with the rest of the squad for the mid-season training camp to Spain.

Rodrigo has been excellent this term. Meanwhile, Joe Gelhardt scored in the win over Elche last week. But it would be a mistake to leave Jesse Marsch with the options he already has.

Obviously, Cunha is not necessarily a target all fans will be immediately excited about. His record for Atletico is extremely underwhelming.

But it says a lot that several top-flight sides want him. And he is still young. So there is scope for his record to improve considerably. And thriving as an attacking player in Atletico’s side is not easy either.

It would be a gamble to sign Cunha given the costs likely to be involved. But given our league position, we have to roll the dice somewhere.
