The Athletic claim Leeds United intend to keep hold of Georginio Rutter this summer despite the club record signing struggling in his first six months at Elland Road – and with the Whites suffering relegation to the Championship.
Rutter, 21, managed just 13 appearances for Leeds since we paid a fee believed to be in the region of £25m, plus add-ons that could take a fee north of £30m. His first goal involvement only came on Sunday in the loss to Spurs.
Indeed, Rutter failed to score in his 13 outings – starting only three times, once in the League. The 1-0 away defeat to Chelsea. After relegation, there were suggestions that Rutter could go out on loan in a bid to restore confidence.
But, Phil Hay has written in his latest Athletic piece that Leeds have made a decision on Rutter’s future this summer. They intend to keep the Frenchman and are hopeful the drop to the Championship helps get the best out of him.
“The 21-year-old Frenchman has talent and maybe the Championship is a level where he could get on a roll. Much as he’s a very expensive signing for a club playing at that level to hold onto, Leeds intend to do so,” Hay reported.

Rutter clearly has talent and there have certainly been glimpses that he could be a £30m player. His performance in the FA Cup against Fulham was notable – unlucky not to score. He had a goal disallowed for a very harsh push.
He also hit the post. Rutter can play out wide, as a second striker or as a no.9. That versatility is key going into a season that could see Leeds play north of 50 matches in all competitions. Keeping him is the right decision.
