Report: Former Leeds coach Gianni Vio set to join Tottenham

One of the most infamous appointments Leeds United have made in recent years – of which, there have been many – was the decision to bring Gianni Vio in back in 2017.

Vio was renowned for being a set-piece guru. And initially, there seemed to be some benefit to having the Italian on board. He had previously had a superb impact at Brentford.

Leeds, at the time, were slipping down the Championship after setting the early pace under Thomas Christensen. And there were moments when the Whites made the most of set-pieces.

However, it is hard to know how much that was down to Vio or rather the brilliance of Pablo Hernandez. His amazing free-kick at Burton, for example, saw some of the Leeds players form a wall in front of the goalkeeper before the magician stepped up.

But ultimately, it was not an appointment that worked out. And Vio’s name now comes up more often in conversations concerning Dave Hockaday and Darko Milanic rather than the Marcelo Bielsas of Leeds’ history.

Nevertheless, Vio appears to be set for a return to England imminently. And he is going to work with one of the best coaches in the world.

According to Tuttomercatoweb, Vio is set to join Antonio Conte at Tottenham. It is noted that he was involved with the Italy squad which won Euro 2020.

Gianni Vio is back

Spurs are one of the sides to watch out for this season. They arguably have the potential to break into the top three while Conte is at the helm.

So it will be fascinating to see how they fare from set-pieces during the coming season with Vio seemingly on the way to North London.
