Marseille are interested in launching a move for Leeds United defender Junior Firpo.
That is according to La Gazette Du Fennec, who report Firpo is their first choice left-back target this summer, though his signing he will need approving by new manager Marcelino Garcia.
Firpo is among those almost certain to move on after Leeds’ relegation, with Fabrizio Romano already reporting the defender’s intention of finding a new challenge in the coming weeks.
The 26-year-old has two years left to run on his deal at Elland Road but has often struggled for form since moving from Barcelona, and a move away is best for all parties.
His time at Leeds was perhaps best summed up by his final start for the club against Newcastle United, where he gave away a needless penalty and was sent off, with Leeds legend Gary McAllister describing his actions for the former as ‘unexplainable.’
Marseille target move for Leeds’ Firpo
With Nuno Tavares having returned to Arsenal after his loan spell, Marseille are in the market for a new left back this summer and Firpo has emerged as a target.
The Champions League side had been linked with a move for Wolves’ Rayan Ait-Nouri, though those reports are said to be wide of the mark.
Firpo has done little to prove he deserves a move to a club playing in Europe’s most elite competition, though if Leeds can recoup a decent fee for him they will have done well.
It remains unclear at this stage whether Marseille will target a loan or permanent move for Firpo, but from Leeds’ perspective it needs to be the latter.
The likes of Diego Llorente, Robin Koch and Marc Roca are all already potentially set to move on loan this summer, and Leeds need to start bringing in some proper transfer funds from their players.
