French outlet Media Foot claim Chelsea want to sign Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier ahead of the January window – with Meslier continuing to shine in between the sticks at Elland Road. He rejected a move to Chelsea in 2018.
Meslier, 22, has surpassed 100 outings at senior level for the Whites. Brought to the club on loan in 2019 from Lorient, Meslier broke into the side towards the end of the season. Leeds gained promotion as Championship champions.
The France Under-21 man completed a permanent move in the summer of 2020 and has gone on to play 103 times for Leeds. The stats do not tell the whole story – clocking up 27 clean sheets and conceding 166 goals in that time.
But his ability with the ball at his feet, and his shot-stopping ability has caught the eye. His leadership in defence at Leeds for a man of 22 is attracting interest. Media Foot say Chelsea have joined Manchester United in the race.
Interestingly, back in 2018, Meslier admitted he rejected a move from Lorient to Chelsea. Speaking to The Athletic in 2021, he recalled Chelsea agreeing a move in 2018 – only for Meslier to reject a move, as it was too late in the window.

Chelsea want to sign Leeds goalkeeper Meslier, rejected Blues in 2018
While Chelsea’s goalkeepers are somewhat questionable, Meslier would be foolish to join Chelsea. At Leeds, he is a mainstay. He is a part of the furniture, and easily, one of our best players. He has enormous potential at Elland Road.
If he was to join Chelsea, he would not be first choice. That is despite the form of Edouard Mendy of late, and the questionable tenure of Kepa Arrizabalaga at Chelsea. Meslier would be in with a shout, but it would take time.
Meslier can continue to play regularly in the Premier League for Leeds and strengthen his claims for a France cap. Or, he can go and warm the bench at Chelsea and get the odd game in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup. Should stay.
