Leeds United target Brenden Rodgers is ready to to return to his former club Celtic.
That is according to the Times, who report Rodgers has held positive talks with Celtic’s hierarchy this week and are now ‘increasingly confident’ of sealing a deal for the 50-year-old.
Rodgers has been out of work since his dismissal from Leicester City in April and is also one of the leading candidates to take over at Leeds.
Prior to his move to the Foxes, Rodgers enjoyed an extremely successful two-and-a-half year spell at Celtic between 2016 and 2019, winning back-to-back trebles.
That said, Rodgers received an enormous amount of backlash and abuse from Celtic supporters after ditching them for Leicester during the season, but he is said to be confident of healing ‘old wounds’.
Celtic are in the market for a new boss after Ange Postecoglou made the move to Tottenham Hotspur earlier this month after himself winning a treble.
Rodgers set for Celtic
Rodgers remains one of Leeds‘ main targets for the position but it feels more and more like Celtic are the frontrunners for his signature at this stage.
The Northern Irishman is competing alongside Daniel Farke at both clubs, with the latter also having been linked with a move to Parkhead.
Based on the criticism he received from Celtic supporters in the wake of his departure from the club over four years ago, it is difficult to see why Rodgers would want to go back there.
Additionally, he has also won all there is to win twice as Celtic boss, so surely there would be a bigger motivation for him to be the man to lead Leeds back to the Premier League.
However, if he feels he is too good to drop into the Championship then so be it, and he isn’t the right man for Leeds.
