Leeds United target Steven Gerrard will have a strong chance of securing the Leicester City job after becoming the new name in the frame for the post at the King Power Stadium.

That is according to a report from The Sun on Sunday (4/6; page 60), which suggests that the Englishman’s camp are close to the Leicester hierarchy as they also continue their search for a new manager.

It does appear that Steven Gerrard is one of the favourites to succeed Sam Allardyce at Leeds. Reports from The Sun this week noted that Leeds are interested in Gerrard as we prepare for life in the Championship.

But perhaps one of the sides who came down with us may beat us to the punch. The Sun on Sunday (4/6; page 60) reports that Gerrard is the new name in contention for the Leicester City job.

Gerrard would be an interesting choice for either Leeds or Leicester. Obviously, he would be a big name given everything he has done in his playing career.

And he did win the league title with Rangers. The work he did at Ibrox does deserve real credit. He turned Rangers into an impressive force, particularly in the European competitions they contested.

However, his spell with Aston Villa did little for his stock as a manager. He left the Villans while they were just outside the relegation zone in the Premier League. And the work Unai Emery has done since has shown that squad’s potential.

Gerrard is the kind of manager who should be able to get a good team out of the Championship. But whether he is going to be someone who changes the game at the highest level is in doubt.

Leeds therefore, need to weigh up whether they should only be looking at this season. Of course, we cannot get complacent. But if Leeds do not have a plan upon promotion, it is going to be an even shorter stint in the top-flight.

And if Gerrard does not seem to have that long-term vision, the Whites should have little problem if he ends up heading to Leicester instead.
