Raphinha leaves Leeds: First words as a Barcelona player, kick-ups, 'Samba is back'

Raphinha finally completed his long-awaited move from Leeds to Barcelona on Friday. The winger penned a contract in front of fans and media, and here are the highlights from his presentation as a Barcelona player.

For some reason, it has become a tradition for players joining either Real Madrid or Barcelona to be filmed doing keepy-uppies on their first day. Raphinha was no different, following his £55million move.

Despite the pressure of the watchful world looking at his ball skills, Raphinha – in bright green boots and Barcelona’s new kit – did not stutter. A couple of tricks, and kept the ball off the ground.

Raphinha’s first words: ‘A dream come true’

Shortly after signing alongside Joan Laporta, Raphinha spoke – dressed in suit and tie – of his move to Barcelona being a “dream come true”. It has been no secret this summer that he wanted to go to the Nou Camp.

Of course, that has been aided by the fact his agent is Barcelona legend Deco. He recalled watching his idol Ronaldinho in a Barcelona shirt as a kid, and that he is fulfilling a dream by wearing the red and blue.

“It has been a dream of mine since I was a kid – and of my family as well. I am going to give my best in order to help the team. I started to watched Barcelona when Ronaldinho came here. Everything he achieved here influenced me.

“I’ve always wanted to come here. I was always hoping that one day that I would be able to realise my dream, to be a part of Barcelona. We all have our different ways of playing, of course,” Raphinha said.

Joan Laporta: “Samba is back”

The Barcelona president was alongside Raphinha when signing his new Barcelona deal, which will stretch until the summer of 2027. Moving inside from off the pitch, the outspoken President gave his take.

“Guys, I just want to add one more thing, Samba is back in Barcelona,” Laporta said, glancing at Raphinha as he said it. A huge signing for the club, a marquee addition, but also a record sale for Leeds United, too.
