Rangers have announced the signing of Ecuadorian midfielder Jose Cifuentes on an immediate basis from MLS champions LAFC – after previously agreeing a pre-contract with the star, amid reports Leeds were also interested.
Cifuentes, 24, has been a revelation for LAFC in the middle of the park – playing for the last three years alongside the likes of some superstar names. Gareth Bale, Giorgio Chiellini, Carlos Vela and more recently, Mateusz Bogusz.
Back in April, MLS expert Tom Bogert claimed that Leeds were in the mix to sign Cifuentes – alongside Rangers and Espanyol. After three years with LAFC, his contract was due to expire at the end of the current MLS campaign.
So, his deal running out on December 31, a pre-contract was available this summer – and for Cifuentes to sign on January 1. Rangers had agreed that, before deciding to actually sign him for now. Sky Sports say it has cost £1.2m.
Rangers announce Jose Cifuentes amid reports Leeds were interested
It is a shame that Leeds did not go beyond initial interest in the South American star. The marauding midfielder is best as a no.8, having a hand in 35 goals in his 129 games for LAFC. The standard is lower, but it is a good rate.
Leeds could have done with a player like Cifuentes in that role and at a bargain £1.2m, he is a player with Ecuador caps – and is only 24. He would have been low risk, but potentially high reward. Leeds have missed a trick, here.
Instead, he will be helping Rangers topple Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic and prevent a third Scottish Premiership title in a row – while also looking to play a part in Rangers securing a place in the Champions League group stages, soon.
