Ralf Rangnick has told Austrian outlet Laola1 that he is hopeful an injury sustained by Leeds United defender Max Wober is nothing serious, or “structural”. The Leeds mainstay was subbed off after 34 minutes on Friday night.
Wober, 25, has been crucial for Leeds. Since joining the club, he has made 13 appearances and while actually on the field of play, only 11 goals have been conceded. He has formed a solid partnership with German star Robin Koch.
It is no secret that Koch is in his best form since joining Leeds in 2020 because of the arrival of Wober. If Leeds are to stave off the threat of relegation come the end of the season, having Wober fit and ready to go is absolutely key.
But on Friday night, Wober was given the role of left-back by ex-Manchester United boss Rangnick. He started well, creating a couple of chances. But on 34 minutes, he signalled to the Austria bench he needed to be substituted.
Austria’s official Twitter account reported that Wober had suffered a muscle injury, to his left thigh. Now, Rangnick has spoken after the match on the injury sustained by Wober – and is hopeful that it is nothing serious for him.

“We’ll take a look at it again tomorrow with the coaching staff and check whether there’s structural damage. We hope that’s not the case,” Rangnick said. Austria take on Estonia in their second game of the break on Monday.
Rangnick hopeful injury to Leeds defender Wober is nothing serious
It is a huge blow for Leeds. Since his arrival in January, the ex-Ajax and Sevilla defender has arguably been our best player. He is certainly in the conversation. The Whites, along with the arrival of Javi Gracia, have made Leeds solid.
But, if Leeds were going to lose Wober and Tyler Adams to slight muscle injuries – then this is the time to do it. It is still a week until Leeds play Arsenal – and the game at The Emirates is almost like a free hit. One we expect to lose.
The games we need Wober and Adams to be fit to play in come after Arsenal. Back-to-back home games against Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest. That defines our season and if it means they are rested against Arsenal, fine.
