DaMarcus Beasley has told talkSPORT that Tyler Adams was, by far, the man of the match during the USMNT’s World Cup draw with Wales on Monday, insisting that the Leeds United star was phenomenal.
The US are gearing up for their crucial clash with England on Friday. Any positive result could be huge, with Iran ahead in their final group game next week.
They will be disappointed that they did not beat Wales in their opening fixture after dominating the first-half. However, they allowed Wales back into the game after the break. And they conceded a late equaliser.
Tyler Adams was phenomenal
One player who did not let his performance levels drop was Adams. The captain produced a display we have grown used to at Leeds, covering every blade of grass across the pitch. And he was still going as so many around him were struggling for energy late on.
Beasley was asked about the mentality of the US squad given that they have the second youngest group at the tournament. And the 40-year-old – who played 126 times for his country during his career – picked out Adams as the player who encapsulates how little fear the team has.
“You look at our captain, he’s 23 years old, the youngest captain in the World Cup. He came from one of the academies in MLS. He’s huge and he was the man of the match by far. Tyler Adams from Leeds was phenomenal,” he told talkSPORT.
Adams has this remarkable way to go unnoticed for the large majority of the game, yet always be in exactly the right position when the team needs him.
He reads the game so well. And he goes about his business with so little fuss.
Some Leeds fans on social media are starting to debate whether they now have a better holding midfielder than Kalvin Phillips in their ranks. The fact that that debate is even being put forward is remarkable.
This tournament is unlikely to be the last we see of Adams as a captain. Certainly, you would expect that he will wear the armband for the USMNT again in the future.
And there are definitely going to be plenty of Leeds fans who want him in a similar role when the time comes for the Whites to look for Liam Cooper’s successor.
