Pundit says ‘tireless’ £10m Leeds star could have done more to help his teammates last night

With two games left, Leeds United have thrown themselves into the mix for automatic promotion and possibly the title after a superb 4-3 win over Middlesbrough – ending Boro’s nine-game unbeaten run.

Going to The Riverside, it looked an incredibly tricky game for Leeds. One point from a possible nine had left fans and possibly players questioning whether the Whites could secure a place in the top two spots.

Even more so after Isaiah Jones had given Boro the lead. But Leeds came back to win, Cree Summerville at his very best – scoring the equaliser and our fourth, as well as creating a third for Willy Gnonto to score.

Patrick Bamford also got his name on the score sheet, after Junior Firpo produced a stunning cross – one that Billy Sharp compared to that of Stewart Downing. A huge win, with Leeds climbing back into second.

Leicester won on the weekend and they have 91 points from 43 games, three to play. Leeds have played a game extra, on 90 points. Ipswich are on 89 from 43, and Southampton in fourth on 87 points, from 43.

An incredible title race with more twists expected – as Leicester and Southampton go into battle tonight. For Daniel Farke’s his changes proved crucial, bringing striker Bamford back into the side over Joel Piroe.

It worked, Bamford scoring for Leeds and working “tirelessly” – as per BBC pundit Jon Newsome – up top to ensure we got the win. He deserved his goal. Newsome, despite praise, said he could have done better.

“He has worked tirelessly, has done great, got hold of it, I would have liked him to hold of it a bit more, him and Rutter, but I am a centre-back, I am always going to say that,” Newsome told BBC Radio Leeds.

The stats show Bamford impressed, but could have done more

The £10m man is renowned for being a streaky striker. Up and down. Thriving off momentum. He hadn’t scored for six games, his last effort coming on March 8 – in the 2-0 away win over Sheffield Wednesday.

WhoScored report that while Bamford got a rating of 7.58, he was dispossessed on two occasions and had an unsuccessful touch, too. So, he could have done better but it is hard to criticise him, his work rate.

A huge win, taking Leeds into Friday night and playing before Ipswich – again. It could see Leeds go four points clear, albeit playing two more games, before Ipswich next play. Mentally, that is a big opportunity.
