Friday night saw Leeds United produce their best performance of the season with both Mateo Joseph and Joel Piroe having an impact from the start, and off the bench.
Joel Piroe was preferred to Mateo Joseph up front at Elland Road against Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United but it was not until Joseph came on that the duo provided a goal involvement each, for Leeds‘ second.
Piroe dropped into the 10 role and it was his positioning and then inch-perfect pass that found the on-rushing Joseph to score his second goal of the season. Patrick Bamford came on the for the last minutes.
Leeds are struggling for numbers at centre-back and in midfield at the moment and even had been out wide before the injured duo Dan James and Manor Solomon returned. But up front, they are well-stocked.

Carlton Palmer discusses Patrick Bamford’s future at Leeds United
Bamford is yet to start a single game for Leeds in the Championship this season. The striker has fallen behind both Piroe and Joseph in the pecking order and any chance of a start would need injuries up top.
There is no doubt that at his best, Bamford is a brilliant option at this level. But he has not been at his best since the 2020-21 season and former Leeds man Carlton Palmer told FLW that he should be sold.
“His game time has been very, very limited this season, and he’s on huge money, so I can’t see Leeds offering him a new contract, I just don’t see how that works,” Palmer said when discussing Bamford.
“I would offload him in January and look to bring another striker. Depending on where you are in the league, you might also be looking to bring a player that can play in the Premier League as well,” he said.
“In my opinion, I think time’s up for Bamford at Leeds United. He’s had very little to offer in the last few years due to injury and unfortunately, when that happens, it’s time to move those types of players on.”
Patrick Bamford’s Leeds spell is ominous after recent admission
Recently, Bamford admitted he wanted to leave Leeds after missing a penalty against Newcastle shortly before the club’s relegation to the Championship. Fans waited for Bamford outside of his family home.
| Season | Games | Minutes | Goals | Assists |
| 2020-21 (Premier League) | 38 | 3063 | 17 | 7 |
| 2021-22 (Premier League) | 10 | 580 | 2 | 3 |
| 2022-23 (Premier League) | 31 | 1672 | 6 | 4 |
| 2023-24 (Championship) | 36 | 1618 | 9 | 2 |
| 2024-25 (Championship) | 5 | 132 | 0 | 0 |
Given his current status within the Leeds squad and that he is struggling for both game time and goals in recent seasons, it is unlikely he is offered a new deal. His current contract is due to expire in June 2026.
Bamford is one of the club’s top earners even after pay cuts following relegation. If Leeds do look to trim their squad further after a summer firesale, Bamford is the obvious one to go in the coming months.
