Pundit reacts to Max Wober display in Leeds draw at Manchester United

Jon Newsome has told BBC Radio Leeds that he really likes Max Wober and thought that he was outstanding for Leeds United in their dramatic draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

Leeds have something to build on at long last. The first game of the post-Jesse Marsch era ended in a 2-2 draw with Erik ten Hag’s side. There is disappointment after Leeds took a 2-0 lead. But everyone would have taken a point beforehand.

Leeds were outstanding for much of the game. But they had to defend superbly towards the end of the clash to ensure that they took something from the contest.

And it was often Wober who was there to step up. In fairness, Robin Koch was also superb alongside the Austrian. But Wober is quickly establishing himself as the star man of the Leeds defence.

Wober has been colossal on a number of occasions since joining the Whites in the January transfer window. And we really do appear to be much stronger at the back when the 25-year-old is in the side.

Certainly, Newsome felt that Wober was a stand out on what was largely a very positive night for Leeds in their push to stay in the Premier League.

“I thought Wober was great. What I like about him, he puts himself in good positions,” he told BBC Radio Leeds.

“He puts himself in good positions to defend. So when the ball’s out wide, he gets a good body shape. He gets himself into the correct position. Same when the ball’s over the top. He reads the game well. And he’s brave and he leaves everything out there and I don’t think you can ask for anything more from a centre-back.

“I thought he was outstanding.”

It really does appear that the January transfer window could be looked back upon as a positive one for Leeds. Wober has already shown on a number of occasions just how much quality he brings to the side.

Meanwhile, Weston McKennie enjoyed an extremely positive full debut for Leeds. And Georginio Rutter was really bright when he came on, holding the ball up superbly.

It is vital that Leeds build on this now. But the signs are that the spine has improved considerably with the additions of Wober, McKennie and Rutter.
