‘Potentially’: Superstar golf trio now keen on Leeds investment after 49ers takeover completion

Golf superstars Rickie Fowler, Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth could all join the investment group at Leeds United.

That is according to world number four Fowler, who was speaking in an interview with Sky Sports, where he discussed how himself, Thomas and Spieth were all looking into investing into the Whites.

This comes after San Francisco 49ers Enterprises completed their full buyout of the club last Friday, which is said to have as many as 60 investors in total.

Those investors fall into two categories, with 11 of them classed as the ‘big players’ and source of much of the capital needed to complete the purchase of Leeds.

There is then a large group of minor investors viewed as contributing ‘added value’ to the takeover, which NBA star Larry Nance jr is already confirmed as apart of.

If successful, Fowler, Thomas and Spieth would almost certainly fall into the latter category and have spoken to Matt Fitzpatrick’s caddy Billy Foster on the potential of investing, who is a huge Leeds fan.

Fowler was quizzed by Sky Sports on the trio’s interest in becoming part of Leeds’ investment group, and admitted it is something they would love to be apart of due to the culture of English football.

“Not yet, technically. There is the group that has moved forward with being involved with Leeds so myself, JT [Justin Thomas] and Jordan [Spieth] potentially will be apart of it.

“He [Billy Foster] didn’t know about it from the start but we told him knowing he’s a huge Leeds United supporter so yeah, it’s cool to have those opportunities and I know we’re looking into it and it’ll be fun if we can be apart of it, if not we’ll continue to root for Leeds to see if we can help out Billy.

“That would be great. Obviously they got relegated but to be able to go to a Premier League game, Champions League game anything like that.

“I just feel like club football over there, we call it soccer here, is a massive sport. It’s continuing to get bigger in the States but since I haven’t been to a game, don’t have the true appreciation until actually being able to go and feel that energy.”

On the face of it, this only looks as though it could be positive for the club. The more investors, the more money Leeds are going to have to invest into improving both the football side of things, and infrastructure.

The aforementioned NBA player Nance jr has already confirmed he has absolutely no say in the big decisions at Leeds, meaning even if there is over 60 investors, only a minority will be making the calls.
