Matheus Cunha has completed a medical at Wolves ahead of a loan-to-buy deal that could see the Midlands side pay £40m – and having snubbed a move to Leeds in favour of Wolves, he waved goodbye to Atletico Madrid on Instagram.

Cunha, 23, has long been linked with Leeds. With the eight-time Brazil international struggling for form and game time at Atletico Madrid – he was expected to leave in January. Now, he is set for Wolves, after starting just 11 of 54 games.

The Mail report that Cunha has agreed a loan-to-buy move to Wolves, with Julen Lopetegui’s side boasting the chance to sign him permanently for £40m come the summer. 90Min claimed Leeds had actually been in talks with his agents.

Cunha has now taken to Instagram to wave goodbye to Atletico Madrid, with a touching post. He also states that football is a game and sometimes things happen. Perhaps, aiming a small dig at the Atleti hierarchy following his exit.

Leeds have missed a trick here. Cunha is a top, top player. While his form at Atletico Madrid has not jumped off the page – it must be remembered that he has still managed to have a hand in 15 goals. Despite only starting 11 times.

Rodrigo remains the first-choice striker. But at 31, and with his injury record, he can hardly be trusted to keep up his run of form. He has managed nine goals in 13 Premier League appearances this season – but Leeds need another.

Patrick Bamford has undergone surgery in Munich, while Joe Gelhardt remains a rookie – although, one with potential. Cunha would have been perfect, also offering cover out wide and in the 10 role. Instead, Leeds will have to face him.
