Player Leeds sold for just £10m during Bielsa’s era now wins division’s POTM award, he’s been on fire

Leeds United have a number of their academy graduates playing across the English football pyramid.

At present, there is one that is really standing out and it is Jack Clarke at Sunderland, who Leeds sold for £10 million back in 2019 under Marcelo Bielsa.

Clarke has just been named the Championship’s player of the month for September after an outstanding run of form that has propelled him to joint top of the scoring charts.

The 22-year-old has seven goals in 11 matches so far this season, six of which came last month in comprehensive wins over Southampton, QPR, Blackburn Rovers and Sheffield Wednesday.

Sunderland are among the teams fighting alongside Leeds for promotion this season, sitting ahead of Clarke’s former side on goal difference in fourth place.

Clarke wins Championship POTM

After an incident away at Middlesbrough back in February 2019, Clarke seemingly lost his way a tad having burst onto the scene at Leeds under Bielsa.

That did not stop Tottenham Hotspur from splashing the cash on him in the summer that followed, though, where he struggled to ever make a breakthrough.

Following a series of disappointing loan spells at Leeds, QPR and Stoke City, Clarke eventually found his way to Sunderland, where is now really fulfilling the early potential he showed at Elland Road.

After helping them win promotion from League One in 2022, Clarke has established himself as one of the Championship’s top players, with nine goals and 12 assists last season.

Clarke has continued his form of last year into this one and with seven goals already, is looking a serious player, which has been reflected in his Championship POTM award.
