Player impressing since £3m exit from Leeds, he has four G/A in four games as side sit in second

Rodrigo Moreno enjoyed his best season in a Leeds United shirt ironically, in the same term that saw us relegated. Now, he is impressing in the Middle East with Al-Rayyan with his side embroiled in a title race.

The 32-year-old spent three years at Elland Road, breaking the transfer record in 2020 after his move from Valencia. He went on to score 28 goals in 97 games for Leeds, 15 of those goals coming in 22-23.

Had Rodrigo not picked up an injury which required surgery at the start of 2023, Leeds might have had a better chance of survival. But, he left in the summer after relegation – moving to Qatar, for a tiny £3m.

Al-Rayyan are looking to win their first league title since 2015-16, and only their second in almost 30 years – the previous title coming in 1995-96. Leonardo Jardim, who impressed at Monaco, is in charge.

They have certainly made an excellent start. Four wins and a loss from five league games in the Qatari Stars League, with Rodrigo playing in four of those five matches. Three goals and an assist, so far.

It has pushed Jardim’s side into second place, behind Al-Sadd – who have won three of the last four League titles. But with Rodrigo firing on all cylinders, Al-Rayyan have every chances of a League title.

What is for sure, is that a move to Qatar surely ends Rodrigo’s chances of being called up by Spain ahead of Euro 2024 – unless, he scores a goal a game from now until the end of the current season.
