Phil Hay has reported on The Athletic’s site that Aston Villa and Rangers stars Emi Buendia and Todd Cantwell are proof that manager Daniel Farke could end up reinstating Willy Gnonto at Leeds United.

Gnonto, 19, has had a transfer request rejected and has refused to play for our last three games. The winger is training by himself, in a different changing room – along with Luis Sinisterra and Helder Costa.

The Italian continues to hold out for a move away from Leeds. The winger is of the opinion that he needs to be playing at the highest level to retain his place in Italy’s squad – ahead of Euro 2024 next summer.

Many might deem that as fair enough – but not, the way he and his camp have gone about things. Many want Gnonto gone – but, Hay reports that Farke could bring him back. Cantwell and Buendia are proof.

While at Norwich, Buendia and Cantwell refused to play and were forced to train by themselves. But, Farke did bring them back when they ended up staying put. That is proof that Gnonto could return.

“It is no secret that at Norwich City, both Todd Cantwell and Emi Buendia spent time training alone after transfer speculation. It is also well known that in the end, Cantwell and Buendia returned to the fold.

“Farke might have been a disciplinarian, but he was not in the business of cutting off his nose to spite his face. The data showed they were working hard. The result was an olive branch from the German.”

Gnonto remains a top, top player. Especially at this level. If he is available outside of the window then it is crucial Leeds get him back in the side. It looks as though it is going to go that way – Leeds want a lot.

Hay says that Lavia’s £53m price tag has been earmarked by Leeds as a benchmark. Everton’s highest offer is said to have been less than half of that. So, it does look as though Gnonto will now stay at Leeds.

If the deadline does strike and Gnonto is still a Leeds player – then he will have to at least play until the winter window to show Italy, and other clubs, what he has got. A few goals and he may be forgiven.
