Phil Hay says that Luke Ayling could come into the side on Saturday, as Leeds face Huddersfield

Phil Hay has told The Square Ball’s latest podcast that he feels Luke Ayling could come into the Leeds United on Saturday as the Whites welcome Huddersfield Town – in order to give Archie Gray a rest.

Ayling, 32, started the first seven games of the season in the League – but has only started one of the next six. He has come on as a late sub in the last three games, against Bristol City, Norwich and Stoke.

But with Archie Gray having played 18 times already for club and country this season, he needs a rest. Against Stoke, he looked a little leggy. It might be that Ayling comes into the side against Huddersfield.

Hay says he thinks that could happen – but, whether that means Gray is given a rest or moved back into midfield, we will wait and see. Glen Kamara remained an unused sub against Stoke on Wednesday night.

“Part of me is thinking it might be a good idea to get Ayling back in there on Saturday, because it is a short turnaround from Stoke to early kick off against Huddersfield,” Hay said, on the latest TSB podcast.

It would make sense. Gray has played so much football and his performances against Norwich and Stoke were a sign he possibly needs a rest. Leeds need experience in a derby against Huddersfield.

Ayling brings that, and we all know his goal against Huddersfield during our promotion season under Marcelo Bielsa. Hair, air guitar. While he might not be at his best anymore, he is the smart option.

Djed Spence remains sidelined – as does Junior Firpo and Stuart Dallas. Leeds will be expected to pick up all three points, with Huddersfield losing last time out – 4-0 at home to Cardiff. Three points, please.
