Phil Hay has told The Square Ball podcast that Leeds United were “in two minds” about signing Glen Kamara from Rangers over his lack of action at Ibrox, raising concern over the Finland star’s fitness.

Kamara, 28, has worked his way into the starting line-up for Leeds this season after joining the club in the summer from Rangers for a fee in the region of £6m. On Friday night, he was our man of the match.

That in itself, is an achievement. Given. the signing of a Bulgaria international that was a regular in the Bundesliga in the form of Ilia Gruev – and the early form of teenage wonderkid Archie Gray, in midfield.

Joining the club from Rangers in the final hours of the window, Kamara had not been involved in any of Rangers’ first eight matches prior to his move to Leeds. He had been excluded from first-team training.

That raised concerns over his fitness and whether he would be able to make an instant impact at Elland Road, as per Hay. It made Leeds, as Hay says, second guess a move – hence the delay over his move.

“Really strong, really good at disrupting what Leicester were trying to do. Got both sides to his game. The fact he hadn’t been involved at Rangers was one of the reasons why it took so long to go through.

“Leeds were in two minds over whether he would come down here and be lacking in fitness that would have stopped him contributing to the season. But that hasn’t looked like a problem, he looks really fit.”

Leeds were in two minds over signing Glen Kamara from Rangers

Kamara has been fantastic since joining Leeds from Rangers. He had to bide his time to get into the side but having done so, he has not looked back. His ability to contribute to attack and defence is pivotal.

Having the defensive screen of Ethan Ampadu alongside Kamara, a non-negotiable when it comes to picking the Leeds side, Daniel Farke needed a player that could do a bit of both. Transition into attack.

Kamara does that perfectly. The ideal box-to-box no.6, alongside the defensive midfielder in Ampadu. Long may Kamara’s improving form continue. He is up there with our best signings of the summer.
