Phil Hay has told The Square Ball podcast that Kristoffer Klaesson will stay at Leeds United this summer, and the plan is for the Norwegian to be promoted to second choice in the goalkeeper reckoning – behind a new signing.
Klaesson, 22, has now been at Leeds for two years but has only managed one senior outing for Leeds. The stopper has struggled at under-21 level at times. Last season, he was second choice – but was replaced by Joel Robles.
He was on the bench for 11 of our first 13 Premier League games last term. But for the next 25, not in the squad, as Robles took over. Of course, when Robles came in to the side at the end of the season – Illan Meslier on the bench.
Hay actually discussed the £1m signing’s future this summer, on TSB’s latest podcast. He says that Klaesson will remain at Leeds – where he has a contract for another two years. The plan is for him to be promoted to back-up.
“Klaesson is our only thing you would describe as an experienced goalkeeper. Klaesson I think will stick around. The plan was for him to stick around and be second choice this season but they will be in the market for someone else.”

Klaesson is clearly a goalkeeper with potential, but has had little chance of making an impression at Leeds. His confidence is likely to be low. But making him second choice, the chance of game time, and U21 first choice helps.
It makes sense to bring him into the reckoning, a level up – rather than having to sign a goalkeeper to play back-up. Especially, if the club decide not to keep Robles – which seems more and more likely. Klaesson as second choice.
