Phil Hay has explained the situation and offered a theory when discussing Leeds United’s possible move to sign Rangers star Glen Kamara on The Square Ball podcast – saying a transfer could still materialise.
Kamara, 27, has been linked with Leeds for the majority of the summer. He has no future at Rangers and has not been involved in any of their matches this term. Leeds are keen to bring in central midfielders.
Others have been linked – Kenny McLean, Ao Tanaka, Ilia Gruev, Matt O’Riley. But Kamara looks like he is the one that is easy to get done. He has a contract at Ibrox until the summer of 2025, but will be sold.
Asked about the situation regarding Kamara and what the chances are that Leeds strike a deal before Friday’s deadline, Hay responded. He says there is a chance that Leeds bite the bullet and sign Kamara.
But, that the reason for the delay is that Leeds and Daniel Farke are simply keeping their options open: “Thing that interests me with him; he’s been up for grabs, he’s leaving Rangers, fee is pretty affordable.
“He’ll be a good addition to the squad. I think they genuinely do like him. But it feels as if they’ve been keeping their options open, it feels as if there’s others out there that they’d be equally happy to have.”

Leeds are clearly looking to bring in a more defensive-minded midfielder to go alongside Ethan Ampadu – but also a 10. Sam Greenwood’s impending move to Middlesbrough means they need to strengthen.
Indeed, interest in Matt O’Riley and Nadiem Amiri is also a sign that Farke knows he needs to bring in a new playmaker. But time is running out and with numerous deals still to be done, Kamara makes sense.
Expected to be in the region of £5m, Kamara is a player that at 27 – is about to hit his peak. A Europa League finalist, a Scottish title winner and a player with 52 international caps. He is a very smart signing.
