Phil Hay has compared Leeds United wonderkid Archie Gray to Fabian Delph and the latter’s emergence into the Leeds side back in League One – while discussing Gray on the latest episode of The Square Ball.
Gray, 17, made his debut for Leeds this season and has instantly become a key player at Elland Road. It comes after almost making his way into the side under Jesse Marsch, only to pick up a few injuries.
On Saturday, Gray was surprisingly used on the right of the defence over Luke Ayling with Djed Spence and Jamie Shackleton injured. He starred for Leeds, during the 2-1 win over Bristol City at Elland Road.
Not only is Gray the next talent to come out of Thorp Arch, but he is a seen as one of the best young players to come through. Delph was, too. A player that won 20 England caps, and two Premier Leagues.
Delph broke in in 2008-09, playing 51 times and having a hand in 16 goals from midfield at the age of just 18. Leeds lost in the play-off final that season. Hay compared Delph and Gray in TSB’s latest pod.
“He’s like Delph in League One, when Delph came in. To begin with you were looking at an academy player, people were saying he is massively talented. From the get go, Delph was an automatic pick.
“He was as good as anybody in the League over that season – it is a bit like that with Gray. Shifting to right-back, you’re asking different things. He ticked boxes all across the board – absolutely brilliant.”

Gray has been a sensation. A player with enormous potential but already, the teen is turning his promise into proven quality. It is also important for him, and fans, not to get carried away. But he is a real talent.
One of the best, at his age, that has played in a Leeds shirt in modern history. A new contract is needed for Gray – and then, being able to match his ambition. A return to the Premier League would be good.
