Paul Tierney appointed referee as Leeds take on Stoke tonight, winless in his last four games

Paul Tierney has been appointed as referee for Leeds United’s trip to Stoke City on Wednesday, his first game in the Championship this season – and Leeds are winless in the last four games he has officiated.

Leeds come into the game in a wonderful run of form. Three wins in a row, after coming from two goals down to beat Norwich on Saturday afternoon at Carrow Road. That is now five wins in seven games.

It has seen us climb into a very encouraging third place. A win would see Leeds go within three points of second-placed Ipswich, if Bristol City beat Kieran McKenna’s men tonight. Ipswich have a game in hand.

Tierney, 42, is the man with the whistle on Wednesday night. He took control of four games involving us last term, none of which Leeds managed to win. But, our last win under Tierney, was something special.

Indeed, it was Tierney in the middle when leeds went to Brentford on the final day of 2021-22 and beat Brentford – Jack Harrison slamming home a winner late on. It also involved Tierney giving us a penalty.

This season, Tierney has been somewhat card happy. In just six games, five of which have been in the Premier League, he has shown a huge 28 yellow cards, and three red cards. Only 12 goals in total.

So, Leeds do not have the best of form under Tierney in recent history. Tierney has been keen with the cards and tonight’s game will be his first League game of the season without the added help of VAR.

A win over Stoke could see Leeds go within three points of Ipswich Town who sit in second, if the Tractor Boys lose away at Bristol City – though Kieran McKenna’s side still have a game in hand.
