Former Leeds United starlet Archie Gray racked up one of the biggest wins of his young career this week when he played the full 90 minutes of Tottenham’s 2-1 win over Manchester City in the Carabao Cup.

While the 18-year-old has only been a bit-part player for Spurs in the Premier League, he has been regular in cup competitions for Ange Postecoglou, playing every minute of the club’s Europa League and Carabao Cup campaigns so far.

Gray joined Spurs in a £30milllion move this summer after making the step up from Leeds’ Thorp Arch academy last season, as he followed in the footsteps of his father Andy, grandfather Frank and great uncle Eddie as the latest member of the club’s greatest family dynasty.

Given this family connection and Archie’s development at Leeds, plenty of Whites supporters will be keeping a close eye on how the teenager gets at Spurs and will be delighted to learn what he did behind the scenes shortly after his arrival.

Patrick Bamford reveals the Spurs record Archie Gray has already ’smashed’

Gray’s former Leeds teammate Patrick Bamford is also keeping tabs on him and the teenager’s name came up during a conversation on Bamford’s ‘My Mate’s A Footballer’ podcast when he was discussing players’ fitness levels.

“The epitome of a fit midfielder is Archie Gray,” Bamford said. “That guy, is a freak. An absolute machine.

“When he went to Tottenham, I texted him and asked him how it was going. And he said that the one thing they might struggle with is kind of coping with the demands in training and the fitness levels. And then he did the VO2 max test.

“You basically, you put some kind of mask on that measures and you run on a treadmill until a threshold, until you can’t keep that pace any longer.

“And whatever the record was beforehand, he absolutely smashed out of the park. And afterwards they were just like, yeah, I don’t think fitness is going to be an issue.”

Tottenham benefitting from Archie Gray’s Leeds United development

It perhaps won’t surprise Leeds fans that Gray is one of the fittest players at his new club.

Gray played in all but three of Leeds’ 55 matches across all competitions last season, clocking up 4,286 minutes in total, a remarkable achievement in his first season at that level.

The England under-21 international broke into Leeds’ first-team squad during Marcelo Bielsa’s time in charge, appearing on the bench as a 15-year-old against Arsenal in the Premier League in December 2021, and will no doubt have benefitted from the Argentine’s demanding training regimes.
