Transfer expert Dean Jones has told Give Me Sport that he “expects” Brenden Aaronson to return to Leeds United if the club regain promotion back to the Premier League – despite leaving on bad terms.
Aaronson, 22, joined Leeds in the summer of 2022 – costing the club £25m in what was Jesse Marsch’s first signing as Leeds manager. A reunion between Aaronson and Marsch, working together at Salzburg.
But it did not go to plan. After a brief, exciting start – Aaronson failed at Leeds. A lack of physicality the main reason for his failings, having a hand in just four goals in 40 games. Nowhere near good enough.
Aaronson was one of eight senior players to use the loan clauses to get out in the summer. Marc Roca, Sinisterra, Jack Harrison, Max Wober, Robin Koch, Diego Llorente and Rasmus Kristensen, also left.
Aaronson has gone to German side Union Berlin – who are in the Champions League. He has made eight appearances, yet to have a hand in a goal – but has been sent off. Jones expects him to return to us.
“If Leeds get back to the Premier League, I do expect Aaronson to be back in the fold. He still wants to cut it in the Premier League, and I think they’d have to give him another chance,” Jones said to GMS.

Of all the senior players out on loan, Aaronson returning to Leeds makes most sense. Harrison might do, too. Bridges with the likes of Wober, Sinisterra, Llorente and Kristensen are surely burnt at this stage.
Harrison has done a lot for Leeds, and Aaronson is still an incredibly young player with potential. Leeds need a no.10 after failing to sign one in the summer – despite moves for Nadiem Amiri and Matt O’Riley.
