Graham Smyth says Lew Bate is “not in the plans” under Daniel Farke at Leeds United and a January move is more than likely – with the player failing to get into the senior side, and is back in the 21’s.

Bate, 21, broke into the senior Leeds during his first year at the club after completing a £1.5m move to Elland Road from Chelsea. He played four times under Jesse Marsch, as Leeds survived in 2021-22.

Last season, he went on loan to Oxford United and played 35 times – impressing, under Karl Robinson. He had a hand in five goals. Only a hand injury at the end of the term stopped him playing more games.

Returning to Elland Road in the summer, one might have imagined Bate to gain regular game time. But, the likes of Ethan Ampadu, Glen Kamara and Ilia Gruev have been signed. He’s back in the Under-21’s.

Yorkshire Evening Post reporter Smyth says that Bate is “not in the plans” under Farke at Leeds – and a move in January seems more than likely, possibly another loan. Ideally, for his career, he needs to go.

“If missing out on 14 straight Championship matchday squads did not say it clearly enough, then Lewis Bate not even getting a kick in a Carabao Cup game at Salford City amplified the message,” Smyth said.

“He’s not in the plans. the window will reopen on January 1 and it would be a shock if he or Leeds settled for the status quo and a second half of the season spent treading water in age-group football.”

Bate is a real talent. A player Marcelo Bielsa raved about, as per Leeds Live, in 2021: “He’s a player that is constantly managing the ball, and he doesn’t lose it very often. He can thread it through the needle.”

To get that kind of praise from a man like Bielsa is a clear sign that he has quality. But, no one can doubt that the likes of Ampadu, Kamara and Archie Gray deserve to start ahead. A loan in January is crucial.
