Leeds United have Brendan Rodgers on a list of managerial targets despite their relegation from the Premier League on Sunday.

That is according to Beren Cross at Leeds Live, who recently held a question and answer session and claimed there are suggestions Rodgers is on the club’s shortlist regardless of how difficult it may be to prise him to the Championship.

Leeds remain on the hunt for both a new manager and sporting director, with both appointments needed swiftly to ensure they are ready for the new season.

Rodgers was sacked from his role at Leicester City last month and will no doubt still harbour Premier League interest once a vacancy comes available.

During his time at the Foxes, the 50-year-old won the FA Cup and guided them to back-to-back fifth place finishes, but was dismissed with the club deep in relegation trouble.

It is certainly set to be a tall order persuading Rodgers to drop into the Championship, but if Leeds are able to present him with an exciting enough project, it is not out of the question.

On Leeds’ interest, Cross said: “Rodgers seems to be the kind of appointment which would at least unite everyone. That’s a head coach with the kind of CV which players, backroom staff, executives and supporters can rally behind.

“However, that level of inspiration is always going to be attractive to top-flight clubs, isn’t it? Even if Rodgers does not get approached for the PL this summer, he is surely going to be near the top of many clubs’ wanted lists when the first round of sackings come in the autumn.

“Convincing Rodgers to drop into the second tier would be a tall order, but there have been noises to suggest Leeds would absolutely have him on their shortlist.”

It is nice to see Leeds showing a little bit of ambition in who they target despite having dropped down a division. It is the sort of thing they could have done with doing in the Premier League.

An appointment of this calibre is absolutely necessary, though, given the frustration and anger from supporters towards the club right now.

The last thing they want to do is bring in someone like Sam Allardyce or Steven Gerrard if they want to unite the fanbase.
