Robin Koch was one of the players criticised by Leeds United fans in the summer as he jumped ship after relegation – but Patrick Bamford shares something amazing Koch did behind the scenes.
Koch, 27, has been on fire for Frankfurt. He joined the Conference League side in the summer, after three years at Leeds. He used the relegation release clause to join the Bundesliga outfit on a year’s loan.
It comes after just 77 games in three years for Leeds, first choice in his final year but struggling with injury in the first two. In his final year at Leeds, he’s gone on loan – pretty much ending his Leeds spell.
At Frankfurt, he is on fire. He started all 17 of Frankfurt’s first 17 games. Scored two goals, two assists. Even captaining his side. Koch was in line for a Germany call-up for November, only to suffer an injury.
Frankfurt are expected to sign him on a free. His Leeds spell is over and given he left to go on loan, he has been criticised. But Bamford shared a great story on his My Mate’s a Footballer Podcast this week.

He says when Koch first joined from Freiburg in the summer of 2020, he said Koch could hardly speak English. But, after one year, he was fluent – but could not understand scousers. Adam Forshaw, then.
“We had Robin Koch, he was here for three years. When he joined, he knew the basics of English like he could say hello, little questions, the staple stuff. Within a year, he was pretty fluent,” Bamford claimed.
“I could sit and talk to him no problem. The only thing he had an issue with was scousers, he couldn’t understand a thing. Understandable, isn’t it?” Adam Forshaw might have been tricky to understand.
