Long-term injuries are always pretty tragic but, in the case of the former Leeds United starlet, there is an extra sense of sadness about a cruciate ligament blow which ends his campaign.
This, after all, was supposed to be the season in which the one-time Elland Road hopeful established himself in a top-flight competition for the very first time.
And, yes, the Belgian league may sit behind the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Ligue 1 and the Bundesliga. Arguably behind the Portuguese league and the Dutch Eredivisie too, in terms of overall quality.
But, swapping England’s fourth tier for KAA Gent to the tune of a reported £1.7 million over the summer, the story of 20-year-old Max Dean was developing into a pretty remarkable tale.
Let go by Leeds in 2023 and swapping MK Dons for the Belgian elite just a year-and-a-half later, via 20 goals in 34 appearances in Milton Keynes. Dean’s impressive start at Gent – 13 goals all competitions by late-December, added another impressive chapter to the Buffalo’s biography.
But all the best stories have an element of conflict. Some heartbreak to battle back from.
For Dean, that heartbreak comes in the shape of an anterior cruciate ligament rupture suffered during Gent’s 3-1 Boxing Day defeat by Union Saint-Gilloise.

An injury which cuts the youngster’s impressive debut season short, and could keep him out of action realistically until deep into 2025.
“It is with a heavy heart that we have to report that Max Dean suffered a serious knee injury during the match against Union,” reads a statement posted on Gent’s official website. “Medical examinations revealed a tear in his anterior cruciate ligament.
“Unfortunately, this means that Max will be out of action until the end of the season. Max will undergo surgery next week and will then begin months of rehabilitation. Our energetic striker is determined to return stronger and is in good hands with our medical staff.
“Max’s mentality and perseverance are admirable, and we have no doubt that he will overcome this setback. Max, all Buffalo’s are behind you and we wish you a speedy recovery.”
Max Dean hoping to bounce back at KAA Gent
To quote Belgian publication Walfoot, Dean had been nothing short of a ‘sensation’ during his first few months with Gent.
He scored during a shock 4-2 win at title-chasing Club Brugge, while a brace during the 5-0 trouncing of Standard Liege felt like a real coming of age moment for a striker who earned himself lots of admirers with Leeds’ youth sides without ever being given the chance to step up to the first-team.
As his agent explained, Max Dean was ‘nowhere near’ a call-up under Daniel Farke.
Fortunately, as Gent themselves allude to, Max Dean is not the sort of player who will allow himself to wallow in self pity. His focus is already firmly fixed on 2025/26, and picking up where he left off.
“I’m going to work really hard on my comeback so I can help the team again next season,” Dean says. “I want to thank the fans for the support I felt every week.”
