Ian Wright has branded Leeds United’s search for a new manager as “desperate” on Match of the Day 2 on Sunday evening – as the club look set to hand Alfred Schreuder the chance to keep the club in the Premier League this term.
Schreuder, who was sacked by Ajax towards the end of January, has emerged as the new favourite to take over at Elland Road. iNews claim that Schreuder was in attendance at Elland Road on Sunday, as Leeds suffered a 2-0 loss.
It is believed that Schreuder will be given a deal until the end of the season. Leeds will then take stock, and make a further decision. It comes after Schreuder struggled in his role as Ajax manager – previously impressing in Belgium.
But it comes after the Whites have seen moves rejected for Arne Slot, Carlos Corberan, Marcelo Gallardo, Andoni Iraola and Ange Postecoglou. Wright gave his verdict on the club’s pursuit to replace manager Jesse Marsch in the last week.
“I worry for Leeds fans, it is the same people in charge who have got to get the next man in. It feels a bit desperate. Is it the first choice, second, third choice. Could it be Skubala? Could they have hung in with Marsch? A bit desperate.”

So, Schreuder is the man that as things stand, looks set to take the job. But it is a sign that Leeds have reverted to plan B. They said they were targeting a man in work – Schreuder is not. His CV is hardly encouraging, at this stage so far.
He won the Belgian title with Brugge last week – winning 15 of 21 games. That saw the ex-Barcelona assistant move to Ajax, where he had previously worked as an assistant. But just 12 games in 26 saw him sacked by Ajax last month.
Is he the man to take Leeds to safety? His recent management suggests, probably not. Fans are not particularly excited. But, Leeds need a manager and we need someone in before crucial games against Southampton and Everton.
