Next Leeds manager: Sam Allardyce makes ‘call me’ plea to club after Wednesday draw

It didn’t take long for Sam Allardyce to throw his name into the hat for the Leeds job. Talking to his No Tippy Tappy podcast, Allardyce said that there has been in no contact – but would be open to taking over, saying “call me”.

Allardyce, 68, has been out of work since failing to prevent West Brom from suffering relegation in 2020-21. Of course, he boasts huge experience, managing the likes of Everton, Newcastle, West Ham, Bolton and plenty more.

But of course, Allardyce – who was also England manager, famously, for one game – is renowned for his style of play. Replacing Jesse Marsch with Allardyce would not go down well at Elland Road. Not least, because of a style clash.

Leeds have spent the last five years playing with freedom, attacking football. Allardyce would get men behind the ball and encourage a counter attack. It is not going to happen. But, Allardyce has said he is willing to take over.

“I’d have thought by now if they were interested in me they know where I am, so call me. If someone called me I wouldn’t turn down going chatting about it, certainly not at Leeds United, but there has been no call.

“So before anyone starts any speculation, nobody from Elland Road has called me about the job in hand. I watched them against Man United and I wouldn’t see any problem sorting them out, from my point of view,” Allardyce said.

Andrea Radrizzani has come into criticism from Leeds fans on social media for his activity on Twitter, since Marsch was sacked. But even he does not need to be told that bringing Allardyce to the club would be a drastic mistake.

Allardyce has proved he keeps teams in the division with his style. At West Brom, he catastrophically failed. Leeds are a club that pride themselves on youth. Free-flowing, attractive football. Allardyce would tear that to shreds.

It would be a woeful decision on Leeds’ part. But, Leeds are not going to hire Allardyce. Even if, Carlos Corberan, Andoni Iraola, Marcelo Gallardo and possibly even Arne Slot reject a move to Elland Road in the coming days.
